Lyric Stage @ Opera MS: "Wizards of Broadway - An Evening of Sondheim & Schwartz"

March 4, 2024 7:00 PM / Duling Hall, Jackson, MS

Created by Dr. Nicholas PernaFeaturing vocalists from Lyric Stage at Mississippi Collegewith Tyler Kemp and The TK TrioAs part of the Opera Mississippi mission to identify and develop operatic and singing artists, we are proud to collaborate and support the education and professional training of student and emerging artists from educational institutions around the state of Mississippi. For these young singing artists, we present master classes, provide professional training for work both on and off stage, offer performances around our communities, cast them in various capacities for our mainstage productions, and connect them with seasoned professional artists and other industry professionals that we bring to Mississippi through our productions.  This spring, students and faculty from Lyric Stage at MC are thrilled to present an exciting musical theatre program as part of our Creating Connection Series. Join Dr. Nicholas Perna and spectacular young artists from the Mississippi College Music Department for an evening of Broadway hits featuring songs by Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz. You will hear popular tunes from shows such as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Into the Woods, West Side Story, Gypsy, Wicked, Pippin, and many more! About Lyric Stage at MC: Lyric Stage is the musical theatre and opera production company of Mississippi College’s Department of Music. While such stage productions have taken place in the MC Music Department for many years, and with the Spring 2022 production of the revival version of Godspell, Lyric Stage took its place as a presenting entity alongside established MC groups such as Singers and Worship Collective. Dr. Perna, Associate Professor of Music said, “The name represents the idea that both [opera and musical theatre] are lyric art forms where music, text, and drama take place simultaneously on stage. We felt like having the moniker Lyric Stage at MC brought all the things we do in our productions together, and we thought it had a good ring to it. It’s a great way to let people know what we’re about. The launch of Lyric Stage is a strategic outreach and recruiting effort for our department. It allows us to bring our musical performance groups together under one umbrella.”Be sure to follow us on Facebook: Lyric Stage at MC and Instagram @LyricStageMC to learn more about our upcoming productions updates, tickets, and how you can partner with Lyric Stage and our endeavors.
