The Symphonic Winds explores and performs the highest quality music available for wind band throughout the year. Emphasis is placed on the understanding and enjoyment of important composers of the twentieth century, although all periods of music are performed. This ensemble performs several times throughout each semester, including three major concerts on campus, a short tour each semester, and various state and community events. There are two rehearsals each week throughout the Fall Semester and three throughout the Spring.
Consisting of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass, and drums, the Jazz Band explores music of all jazz periods from the Big Band Era to the present. The emphasis is placed on ensemble jazz playing and the learning of improvisation. Several on and off-campus events are planned each semester including a major concert in Jean Pittman Williams Recital Hall each semester. There are two rehearsals each week throughout the year.
The Choctaw Pep Band provides excitement and entertainment for all MC home football games during the Fall Semester. The Pep Band performs different music every game for halftime entertainment, with the emphasis being on an exploration of different styles of music appropriate for the venue. There is only one rehearsal each week plus a 3-day retreat at the beautiful Twin Lakes Camp and Conference Center the week before classes begin.
