MC Creates: Variations on Themes
April 4, 2017 7:30 PM / JPW Recital Hall, Aven Fine Arts Building, Missisippi College, Clinton, MS
MC Creates is an annual celebration of the creativity of a collection of artists all displaying their gifts in a collaborative setting. The project encompasses students from four academic departments—Art, Music, English, and Communications. Drawing inspiration from the chosen music, artists create graphic designs, writers compose literary works based on what they hear, theatre students read the text, and pianists play the selected musical work.
“Variations and Toccata on a Theme by Paganini” by James Sclater
The “Variations and Toccata” is a set of fourteen variations and a fiery toccata. The theme is a famous one from a set of study pieces by the virtuoso violinist, Niccolo Paganini (1782–1840). No less than five composers have composed sets of variations on this theme, and in 2002, our own composer-in-residence James S. Sclater wrote another set. First premiered by pianist Angela Willoughby, the piece is presented tonight by ten different pianists. Although none of the variations were originally titled, some have been giving names by the writers for this program.
This event is free and open to the public.
