Audition Information
Undergraduate Auditions
Vocal
- Prepare two songs of contrasting styles from the classical music tradition (i.e., Italian, French, German, Spanish or English art song and/or aria), one of which should be in English.
- A song from standard music theatre repertoire or a traditional hymn may be substituted for one of the songs of the classical music tradition.
- Popular songs (e.g., country, contemporary Christian, praise and worship, rhythm and blues, urban, pop, jazz, etc.) are not suggested.
Instrumental
- Perform two (2) movements from solos or etudes of contrasting styles and tempos of the performer's choice. The music should feature the strengths of the player's technique, range, musical control, dynamic range, and overall ability. Memorization is not a requirement for the audition.
Organ
- Organ Performance
- One Bach piece
- One 19th-20th century piece
- One piece of the student's choice
- One hymn
- Church Music, Bachelor of Arts, or Music Education-Organ
- One Bach piece
- One contrasting piece
- One hymn
Piano
- Perform from memory two (2) selections of standard piano literature representing two different periods or styles: example-Baroque and Romantic; Classic and Contemporary, etc.
Graduate Auditions
Piano
- Four memorized pieces to include one Baroque work (i. e. Prelude and Fugue of J. S. Bach), a sonata from the Classical period, a work from the Romantic period, and either an Impressionist or Twentieth-Century work.
Organ
- A major Bach Prelude and Fugue, a large Romantic work, and a work by a composer born after 1930.
Vocal Performance and Pedagogy
- One aria from opera or oratorio, a seventeenth- or eighteenth-century Italian song or aria, a German Lied, a French mélodie, and a song in English.
- Additionally, a week prior to the audition, a piece in a foreign language will be assigned to the prospective student to prepare for presentation demonstrating competency in learning music.
